Sasha Owen-Longfellow has an entire blog dedicated to her every day fancy-pants taco eating life. It’s hard to understand how someone can survive solely on tacos, burritos, and hummus.
“That’s how I stay so thin,” Sasha says, flipping her hair over her shoulder and staring off into the distance.
“Beans, they just move right through you.”
If you ever hear Sasha speak, you’re sure to laugh. She has this sort of confusing midwestern dialect thrust out in a low voice. I imagine her in her hometown of Omaha Nebraska, chilling poolside wishing she was at the beach.
“I don’t like pools,” she says.
She moved to New York five years ago, after living in Tokyo, Milan, and Seoul working as a model. I’ve heard her when she was drunk, speaking Japanese, and yelling odd phrases at Koreans passing in the street. I’ve known Sasha for twenty-four years, and for the duration of six of them she has talked about Tokyo every single day.
“It’s so clean, and the people are so subservient and interesting and repressed.”
“Have you ever tried bath goo before? It’s this packet full of powder you can purchase in the sex toy section of Don Quijote (ドン キホーテ). You fill a tub full of water and powder and the whole tub turns to slime. Like gak. It’s made for sexy time but my friends and I just use it to play around in.”
Bath goo and beans: thus is the essence of Sasha Owen-Longfellow. It’s impossible to get this girl to talk about anything serious. Her family of six is very much the same: older brother, two younger sisters, everyone always joking and teasing each other.
“I grew up watching a lot of TV and playing a lot of video games. I had a happy childhood. What’s the point of being serious when there’s so much to be laughing about?”
Naïve some might say. But there’s a wise woman behind those ice blue eyes.
