FRANK DELGADILLO, FOUNDER OF CHAPTER
Frank Delgadillo, a Southern California native and graduate of Chapman University switched his focus from a career in law to follow a passion for design. Infusing artisan influence of craft and trade from Tokyo, he first launched Ambiguous clothing in 1996 out of his dorm room. Ambiguous continued to grow into a pioneering niche brand, which held a unique place in the hearts of the SoCal consumer amongst the fast growing competitive boardsports marketplace.
In early 2005, Delgadillo started experimenting with a new side project, called Comune to allow for a more open creative platform free of industry constraints. Sold mainly to limited stores in Japan, this new side project continued to flourish and fill a void in what was becoming a homogenized retail marketplace. Faced with limitations to maintain the design integrity and vision of Ambiguous, Delgadillo sold his interest in the brand and set out to further develop Comune in the U.S. bringing a fresh approach and outlook to the men’s fashion arena.
Comune grew quickly experiencing not only phenomenal financial growth but also as a brand that finally bridged the gap between skate, snow and the contemporary market. By collaborating with artists, musicians, photographers, skaters and snowboarders to augment an already fluid design aesthetic, Comune answered its own mantra: ‘Something Better Change.’
Led by his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to progression, Delgadillo recently launched CHAPTER, a brand that assembled as a commitment to autonomy founded by a loyal collective of modern minds and artisan hands willing to uphold their creativity as part of a shared common vision of supporting others curating a similar lifestyle. Guided by the mission ‘Nothing More Beyond’, Delgadillo asserts the position that utmost quality doesn’t start and stop at design and the aesthetic of each collection but also extends to a redefine a progressive lifestyle, weaving itself into every aspect of the identity.
Beyond the clothes, Delgadillo’s philanthropic interests have circled back around to his days at Chapman University where he was recognized in 2006 as “Young Alumni of the Year” through a mentorship program he created for underprivileged Hispanic skateboarders in the community of Old Towne Orange, to funding two independent student film projects, and to bolstering the careers of emerging artists. One of these film projects underwritten and supported by Delgadillo has already made a mark. “Numb” by Chapman University graduate, Sean Flynn went on to win numerous awards including a Gold Medal for excellence at Park City Film and Music Festival and is being screened at movie festivals around the world including Cannes Film Festival and Ireland’s Dingle International Film Festival. In addition Delgadillo received the 2010 Estrella Award from the Orange County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Delgadillo currently sits on the Chapman University Alumni Board.
