You may or may not be familiar with certain talented artist going under the moniker, SHADED. The music Producer known to his friends as Skyler Taugher, from Newport Beach stopped by the office the other day. His style is noticeably different with an intriguing combination of good looks and talent, and of course always a pleasure to hang out with.
Punk ethics? Driving baselines? Rock ‘n’ Roll percussions? Hip Hop influence and somewhat inappropriate vocals? It’s hard to pinpoint his music influence, however sound can be best described as a fusion of sexy vocals, dark rhythms and technological brilliance. Currently touring with his long time idol and now close friend, techno DJ and Producer Dubfire, he is racking up frequent flyer miles, playing at some of the biggest clubs across the globe. His LIVE, dance floor friendly, Four-on-the-floor performances are unapologetic and leave the crowd brain-buzzing while wanting more.
What we find interesting about Taugher is his creative process. Through his journey and experiences on the road, back home is where he finds himself most creative when making his music. “I make the best music when I am ready to disappear from my most comfortable state. Home keeps me in an open state of mind. It allows the most personal stuff to come out. When I make my music I have a specific vision and a vibe that I try to encompass and stick to.” Clade in darker tones there is a uniform-like quality about Taugher, that which appears to be properly thought out and cleanly executed both with his music and fashion sense.
Taugher will say it has been a journey. He has experimented with music in one shape or form from the local punk scene taking influence from artists like ‘Dead Kennedys’ to his love of electronic bass synths stemming from the likes of artists like ‘Air’ and ‘Röyksopp’ and hip-hop favorite ‘J Dilla’. As his interests in music have progressed so has his determination. “Anytime in the beginning no one really pays attention to you – there are so many people now that are making good music it is hard to really get someone’s attention.”
Perseverance however has prevailed for Taugher as he talks about where he’s been to the tune of his earlier production duo, SHDWPLAY (where he and his ex-partner released four EPs under Dubfire’s label, SCI + TEC), and his desire for artistic independence, which ultimately is where he is headed, now producing individually as SHADED. We can respect that.
With each release Taugher continues to evolve his taste and push forward. “I’ve always believed as long as you have the mental drive and you really have a feeling and understanding of what you want to achieve – you will eventually get there.” Well SHADED has our attention, and we can’t wait to see what he does next.
