Introducing the latest release, Lunar, in Chapter’s music series, COMPOSITION_DISORDER with artist, Public Memory. Based upon the blending of disciplines of similar mind and direction coming together as an inspiration of sorts, COMPOSITION_DISORDER, features the artist’s own uniquely conjured interpretations of dark, distorted but emotionally powerful ambient sound. By creating irregularity in compositional spaces the perspective of scale and the listener’s place is shifted.
Public Memory is the solo project of Brooklyn’s Robert Toher, recorded over the course of a year as he lived in Los Angeles temporarily. Previously of the group ERAAS, Robert places a greater emphasis on electronics in this new project. Rhythm is at the forefront, with the tone informed by stripped down, narcotic impressions of krautrock, hypnotic percussion, and subtly layered atmospherics. Spectral vocals meld with delicate piano against hip hop beats and a dub sensibility, conjuring clouded lights, foggy glass in empty buildings, urban wraiths.
Lunar is the final track on the Public Memory record Wuthering Drum. There is a sort of “procession” feel at play here – the sound and the cadence of the beat, the bass notes and the chimes together, feel very much like the will to carry on despite circumstances, with a kind of unabashed calm. There is a sadness at hand, but a greater, more eternal consent with the truth – be it immediately desirable or not, it shines through. This is sort of a closed-eye nod to dutifully embrace circumstances, whether or not they seem promptly apropos or sought after. “The moon to me, signifies two things: emotion and change. Full moons (fully illuminated) and new moons (non-illuminated) are high times of spiritual change and change in consciousness and perception – pertaining to the self and relationships. They signify the end of stanza-like eras in cognizance, and the beginnings of new ones. Despite what may be undesirable circumstances in the present tense, it looks knowingly, if courageously toward the road ahead.” – Robert Toher.
Public Memory’s forthcoming album Wuthering Drum will be released Fall 2016 on Los Angeles based label felte.
