The light and rain dampened the old structures before the collapse. Amongst dirt and gravel, the brush swindled a decay of the once standing wooden bodies. Pieces of timber that once fell dormant to use now bring families and friends together. A congregation of souls adapted to one object with four legs. A surface held together by equal parts, not one piece more important than the other. A table created by Gareth Stehr. Subject: Table Creator: Gareth Sther Photographed: Jamie Parkhurst

There is a red light blinking at the tip of the plane’s wing that sits directly over my left shoulder. The blank minded stare from the back of my eyes seems to match my heartbeat to pulse of the flickering light. As the sun falls behind the clouds, a soft and empty feeling grazes my entire body. The depressants begin to soothe my chest, a slow-to-warm-up type of feeling. A fuzzy cloudiness seems to travel up through my legs, finally arriving right around my sternum. The anxiety reforms and then transcends into relaxation as I put a soft playlist together.

I’ve just arrived back in Tokyo. The last time I was here was for a three week vacation in 2010, I stayed for seven months. This time I know for certain that my time is limited. I have only one month to get into trouble, seek adventure, and eat my favorite rice cracker peanut snack (kakinotane.) If you have the patience to watch any– if not all– the videos I created on my last Tokyo journey, I can assure that you will come away with something (More than likely the complete envy of such a mass of people jamming out

Oddity connoisseur, surf junky and photographer Mike Spears has made a name for himself traveling about the planet, snapping photos of the bizarre, off-beat, and provocative. From scandalously clad twenty-somethings, to mutilated seafood, to the quirky yet honest portraits of a local inhabitants, our new friend Mike clearly has a knack for cutting straight through the bullshit and finding the heart of any situation. He doesn’t strike me like a guy who wastes much time. Spears has just published a photo-zine of his work, which he was gracious enough to send us a copy of. It hosts an eccentric spread

There’s an intense honesty in hearing music performed live—and for obvious reason—the imperfection, the minuet improvisation and the off-chance of hearing something so disarming that it’s difficult to stomach. You’re supposed to be uncomfortable, or at least a little nervous. There’s only a few of these out there and are hard to pass by. They are the dirt under your fingernails; the last conversation between two people who used to love each other. Pure vulnerability. A great live performance reminds you that something could go horribly wrong, when all of a sudden, it doesn’t. Check out the CHAPTER staff picks

It has been said that, “By the work, one knows the workman.” If this is true, then my dear friend Gareth Stehr has some serious issues. His methodically planned pieces of art are overwhelmingly bright, perversely irreverent, and almost always tie back into a central theme of death. But in the same light, his work shows something that I feel is often overlooked. There’s a patience about it; a calmness not expected when you’ve seen him throwing his body at pavement for years on end. His work is clean, unlike his beard which he wears like a trophy strapped to
